Good morning, AI entrepreneurs & enthusiasts,

The AI shift from quick responses to deep, complex reasoning just took a major leap forward.OpenAI’s latest feature, Deep Research, transforms ChatGPT from a conversational assistant into a full-scale AI researcher, autonomously analyzing multiple sources and compiling detailed, citation-backed reports in minutes. With a 26.6% score on Humanity’s Last Exam—outperforming Gemini Thinking (6.2%) and GPT-4o (3.3%)—Deep Research is setting a new benchmark for AI-driven knowledge synthesis. In today’s AI news:OpenAI debuts AI research assistantOpenAI introduces o3-mini reasoning modelSam Altman’s stance on open sourceTop Tools & Quick News

OpenAI debuts AI research assistant

The News: OpenAI just launched Deep Research, a new ChatGPT feature that conducts extensive web research on complex topics and delivers detailed reports with citations in under 30 minutes.

The details:

  • The system utilizes a specialized version of o3, enabling it to analyze text, images, and PDFs across multiple sources, delivering thorough research summaries.

  • Initially, access is restricted to Pro subscribers ($200/month) with a limit of 100 queries per month. However, if safety benchmarks remain stable, OpenAI plans to roll it out to Plus and Team users in the coming weeks.

  • Research tasks typically take between 5 to 30 minutes, beginning with a set of clarifying questions before results are compiled and delivered.

  • Deep Research achieved a 26.6% score on Humanity’s Last Exam, dramatically outperforming competing AI models like Gemini Thinking (6.2%) and GPT-4o (3.3%).

Why it matters: While ChatGPT is known for delivering quick, on-the-spot responses, Deep Research represents a major shift towards tackling complex, time-intensive tasks traditionally requiring days of human effort. With the launch of Operator, AI-powered workflows are moving toward longer reasoning cycles and autonomous execution—a shift that could significantly enhance the accuracy and depth of AI-driven insights.

OpenAI introduces o3-mini reasoning model

The News: On Friday, OpenAI released o3-mini, a cost-efficient reasoning model that enhances STEM capabilities for both free and paid users—offering faster response times and significantly lower costs compared to previous iterations.

The details:

  • Free users can now access reasoning features for the first time via o3-mini, while paid subscribers benefit from increased rate limits of up to 150 messages per day.

  • o3-mini excels in technical domains like math and coding, rivaling or even surpassing o1’s performance—all while responding 24% faster.

  • Developers gain greater control with adjustable “reasoning effort” settings—low, medium, and high—allowing them to optimize for either speed or accuracy depending on the task.

  • The model operates at 63% lower cost than its predecessor, bringing pricing down to $1.10 per million input tokens while maintaining competitive performance.

Why it matters: DeepSeek may have dominated the conversation this past week, but OpenAI has once again pulled another ace from its sleeve. o3-mini marks the first time free-tier users will experience true AI reasoning, paving the way for broader adoption. And with the full o3 model set to arrive in "less than a few months," the next leap forward in AI capabilities is right around the corner.

Sam Altman’s stance on open source

The News: OpenAI held a Reddit AMA following the launch of its o3-mini model, with CEO Sam Altman, CPO Kevin Weil, and others tackling questions ranging from candid commentary on open-source tech to upcoming feature and model timelines.

The details:

  • Altman revealed that he personally thinks ‘we have been on the wrong side of history’ regarding open source and that OpenAI needs to figure out a strategy.

  • The CEO also said that he guessed the full o3 would be released in ‘more than a few weeks, less than a few months.’

  • Altman also commented on DeepSeek, calling it a ‘very good model’ and saying OpenAI will ‘produce better models, but maintain less of a lead.’

  • Weil provided a few nuggets about upcoming releases, saying more agents and a new image generator will be available very soon.

Why it matters: The biggest headline is the open-source commentary, which is the biggest criticism OpenAI faces. While no changes seem imminent (Altman said not everyone at the company shares his opinion, and it's not a high priority), a shift in any capacity would be a paradigm-altering moment for the entire industry.
